Dear sirs,
Here is my questions:
We have been here waiting for John a long time. We think he _________ show up.
(A) can't
(B) might not
Which is the correct answer to the quesiton? What's wrong with the other answer?

Might not is the answer. It means there is a possibility that he will not show up. The reason is not given, other than that he is very late, but may be because he's changed his mind, missed the bus, forgotten, or some other reason (which may also include those that follow).


If you say, he can't it means he is unable to show up. (he may want to, but something is preventing him from doing so. It could be sickness, accident, death, or some smaller problem.

Generally, if you say, "Jim can't come." You know Jim is not coming and usually, you know why.
