French scientists said Friday they had found a way to have genetically engineered animals to produce milk that can be easier to digest. They hav only tested mice, but say if the same genetic changes can be made to cows, dairy farms can churn out easy-to-digest milk. "About 70 percent of all adults around the world have lactose intolerance," Bernard Jost and colleagues at French Medical Institute said. They cannot digest lactose, a milk sugar. They get diarrhea, nausea, abdominal cramps and other uncomfortable symptoms. Jost's team said they inserted a rat gene into mice that causes them to predigest the milk before they secrete it.

In the bold text, what do 'them', 'they, and 'it' refer to each?

Thanks.

Them = the mice into which a rat gene has been inserted.
It = the milk that they secrete.
