Tom had a drug problem two years ago. He was snorting (cocaine)
every day.

Is the object `cocaine�absolutely necessary? (snort - transitive verb)
Please comment.

Yes. It's necessary. You can snort other drugs too, apparently (although cocaine is the main one inhaled like that).
