I'd say you use "are" when you want an answer as to someone's current state, actions or intentions:
e.g. Are you happy? Are you going to town? Are you dating Erica?
You use "do", in conjunjunction with another verb, to elicit a general answer:
Do you play golf? Do you like Shakespeare? Do you want a sandwich?
Do you believe there are dragons?
Like many rules in English usage, this one is not engraved in stone.. |
