Although many of the characters in the film Avatar are not human, it doesn't feel like they matter as much.

What does the underlined sentence mean?

If something matters then it's important. The sentence is saying that many of the characters aren't human, but they don't feel as important as the humans. It could mean important in the actual story, or it could mean that the audience doesn't seem to care as much about the non-humans, it's not clear from this sentence alone!
