| Fumbling is where you almost drop something, or otherwise handle something awkwardly (ever fumbled in the dark, groping for the light switch and bumping into objects?). I think in this case though it's an American football reference - if you fumble the ball you drop it (drop the ball is another metaphor) and you lose possession. It's basically making a bad move and ruining things, especially when other people are relying on you. |
