Hello, teachers!!

(1) I lost a pen, but I found it later.
(2) I had lost a pen, but I found it later.

I think that (2) is technically correct, but (1) is more used, I guess.
Which is better? Which do you use?

They're both OK. You would be more likely to use #1, as you suggest.
