Yesterday I thought somebody was breaking into my neighbour`s flat. So I called the police. Later I found out that I was wrong, so calling the police wasn`t necessary /essential.
Would you accept both verbs in such a context? |

| Necessary would be the usual word to use. Essential is stronger. It means absolutely necessary; extremely important. |
