I find this a bit puzzling.

Why are 'by' and 'at' used differently following the verb 'grew'? Do they have different meanings? How do we tell the difference from their usages?

| By or at. They both work in this situation. Writers often try to avoid using the same words close together. I suppose they think it sounds better and perhaps it does sound better. |
