I came across the following the sentence:

If there were no newspapers to tell us what was happening in the world every day, we would be greatly inconvenienced in our daily lives.

I understand the tense of the sentence is Conditonal 2. However, I'm not sure whether it is correct to use 'was' instead of 'is' in the sentence above. I am also wondering if it is possible to say, '...what is happening...' I would really appreciate if you could tell me and explain that.

I think you can say "What is happening" and it would be equally good English.
