Is this sentence correct?

I prefer that this topic was left untouched.

If not, how can I correct it? Thanks for your help.

Since this is a hypothetical situation (what you prefer is not necessarily what happens) you should use the subjunctive mood.
I prefer that this topic be left untouched.
However, today, most people would say, "I prefer that this topic is left untouched."

Or, I would prefer that this topic were left untouched. Is also a valid option.
As is, I would prefer it if this topic were left untouched.
Probably the majority would say, "I would prefer it if the topic was left untouched."
It's not grammatically correct, but it is a sign of the times we live in. Rolling Eyes
