I don't hear difference between the sounds of these two symbols, but my dictionary writes that with the word [stomach] the o is the ^ sound and the a is the schwa sound. They sound equal to me. Help!

| Stomach sounds like stumuk. As you say, the two vowel sounds are almost identical. |

| They are not the same to me. One is stressed (the first syllable of stomach) and the second is unstressed. I pronounce them a little differently, myself. The reduction doesn't have the same full sound in my opinion--at least not in my speech. You can use different symbols for it, but it's the reduced sound. |
