Dear teacher:
I'm the TA for a German professor this semester.
Sometimes I have to write an E-mail to him.
There are sometimg bothering me.
I don't know which honorific is proper.
Somebody says "Sincerely yours" is only for same generation, and other says it's formal to use.
Which honorific should I use to show my respect but not so unfamiliar?
Sincerely yours,

The formal way to end business correspondence used to be (and perhaps still is) "Yours faithfully".
"Yours sincerely" was used between people who were on friendly terms.
Emails, however, are generally much more relaxed and I think you can end them with something like "Regards", or "Kind regards".
Why not just ask your German professor how he would like you to end his emails?
He is, after all, there to teach you and each of us has his own preferences. |
