The 4 Parts of IELTS Writing you Should Know About goodEnglishHelp.com - your online IELTS tutor

IELTS examiners consider four major parts when marking IELTS writing papers. Therefore, it is important for candidates to know about each part so they can receive the highest IELTS writing score possible. They are:

1) Coherence and Cohesion how well your writing connects/flows together. To make sure you achieve good coherence and cohesion you should ask yourself the following:

- Do you use a range of transition signals (for example, however..)?
- Do you avoid repeating words by using synonyms (increase, rise, jump..) or pronouns (it, them, they..)?
- Is your writing nicely arranged into logical paragraphs focusing on one idea?
- Do you have a thesis statement introducing your essay in your first paragraph?
- Is there good flow between sentences and paragraphs?

2) Grammar how accurate and complex your writing is. To make sure your grammar score is at your best level, you should do the following:
- Show your grammar ability by using a range of sentence structures (simple, compound, complex..).
- Find the most common grammar mistakes that you make and study how to avoid them.
- Spend 3-5 minutes before the end of the exam to edit your writing and correct any silly mistakes you make.
- When practicing your writing get a native-English speaker to read your essays, circle, and identify common grammar mistakes you make - there is a good IELTS tutor at goodEnglishHelp.com who can help you improve your IELTS score.

3) Vocabulary how advanced and precise your words are. To ensure a higher vocabulary score you should do the following.
- Spend a few minutes at the end of the IELTS writing exam to check for any silly spelling mistakes that you should avoid.
- Use semi-formal/formal language instead of informal language (use receive instead of got, significant instead of big..).
- Try to show your advanced vocabulary level by using exact/less wordy language (Use This diagram demonstrates not As you can see in this diagram).
- Make your own vocabulary notebook and regularly study and practicing using new vocabulary that you have learned from readings, discussions, etc.
- Get a native English speaker (goodEnglishHelp.com) to check your writing for common vocabulary problems, such as word form or wrong word choice errors.

4) Task Fulfilment How well do you answer the question. Make sure to:
- Spend one to two minutes to understand the question before brainstorming.
- Briefly brainstorm key ideas that you will develop in your answer, and think of specific support (examples, facts..) that you can use to develop them.
- Answer all parts of the question (do you have to have your opinion/both sides?).

For further questions or help on any of these parts ask the IELTS tutor at GoodEnglishHelp.com and/or do any of our online IELTS exercises with answers.
