Hello. When I recently read a text, I came across the phrase "a crackling smile". The context where the phrase appeared was as follows:
Dean was a complicated guy. He had a crackling smile and a doctorate in economics from UCLA. He read Marx and the Bible.
What does a crackling smile mean? Is it just a smile with crackling sound? Does it imply the innocent smile as worn by a baby?
Please anybody help me with this. Thanks. |

Crackling is the crisp outer skin of roast pork, the sound of small cracking noises in rapid succession, or a pattern of small surface cracks, so I would say the author has used the wrong word.
In UK cracking is used informally to mean excellent, or fast and exciting..
I would say the author should have used cracking, or some other word that better describes a smile. |
