Dear Teacher:
Hi, I am a college student from Taiwan.

"Hope" and "wish" has the same meaning, but it must be some different between them.
My English teacher in my junior high school had taught these two words' method of use, but it just confused me.
Teacher said that these two words are kinda different, but I couldn't understand from then on.
Every time I want to use these two words, I stop and give up using it.

Would please give me some opinion about using these two words?

Thanks for your response!

I hope I can explain this to you so you understand it a little better. (It's possible you will understand it better.)
I wish I could explain this to you, but I'm afraid it's too complicated for me to do it. (Most likely you will not understand.)

I hope I can see you tomorrow. (It's a possibility.)
I hope I can pass the test because I studied really hard.
I hope I'll be able to go somewhere on my vacation (if I have enough money and time--it's possible.)

I wish I could take a vacation now (but I can't because I don't have enough money or time.)
I wish John would come and visit me. (So far he has no plans to visit.)
I wish I had time to cook a nice dinner, but I've been very busy.

I hope that helps a little. I wish I could explain it better, but that's the best I could do.

Dear teacher:
Thanks for your response! But I think I need to read more and I will realize how to use these words more!

ReBegin,

Reading will certainly give you a better understanding of the two. Keep in mind that "hope" is wishing for something with an underlying faith that it will happen -- often with good intentions. "Wish" is more of a peronal want, often to obtain a goal.
