Dear teacher:
I have a question!
And, there is the question: The hurricane season last year provided twonspeople with _____ opportunity to test the effectiveness of the more stringent building codes.
(1) ample
(2)a lot
(3)many
The answer is (1)ample. But i feel strange to it!! " ample" means a lot, so why can't use a lot. Besides, if we use "ample", why the word "opportunity" is a singular number except a complex number?
I am really confused, please tell me!! Thank you very much. |

The answer is (1)ample. But I feel that's strange.!! "ample" is correct and it's not countable here. If it were countable, it would be followed by 'opportunities', but it is followed by "opportunity'.
" ample" means a lot, so why can't (I)(we) use "a lot"? 'a lot opportunity' is grammaticaly incorrect. 'a lot of opportunities' would be correct. Besides, if we use "ample", why is the word "opportunity" a singular and not multiple?
"ample opportunity" is noncountable.I am really confused, please tell me!! Thank you very much. |
