The following is my question:

Six feet tall and weighing between 400 and 500 pounds, a grown male gorilla is 10 to 14 times as powerful as the strongest man. Standing up, thick arms flung to the sky, he seems much like King Kong, the super gorilla of the movies. But we have learned that gorillas would rather use their power and frightening display to avoid trouble, ______ to make it.

(A) and (B) not (C) but (D) only

I think the answers (B) and (D) are both acceptable. Could someone help me out?

Thanks a lot.

I think B is a good answer. It means the gorilla doesn't want to make trouble. If you use D, it means the opposite. (The only reason he uses it is to make trouble.) It doesn't match the rest of the sentence.
