Dear Teachers,
What does, "be rented to" in the following sentence?
"The mass media segment the general population into marketing niches, then construct niche audiences by creating special content to attract people in each niche so those audiences can be rented to advertisers."

I know that on my website, 100% of the readers drink a lot of fizzy drinks. If I go to a fizzy drinks manufacturer, I can sell them advertising space on my website and their adverts will get straight to an audience that will consider buying their product. The audience is mine because they come to my website but I am "renting" the audience to the fizzy drinks manufacturer.
