Which sentence is grammatically right?

1. The new line of Therma Winter Gear appeared in stores over five years ago, and hardly anyone seemed to notice.

2. The new line of Therma Winter Gear appeared in stores over five years ago, and hardly did anyone seem to notice.

In my grammar knowledge, an auxiliary verb is always placed next to a negative word in a sentence when the negative appears at the foremost of the sentence.

Grammar aside, number 1 is more colloquial ("Colloquial (speech), which is informal, relaxed speech used on occasion by any speaker"- Wikipedia).

Whereas, number 2 seems more stilted when the word "did" is used.
