Hi,
I don't undrstand what 'nearly-made-it's' mean in the following sentences. Could you please explain this?
The failing economy has not nearly made it's debut. (It's an article title from http://www.articleblast.com/News_and_Society/Economy/The_failing_economy_has_not_nearly_made_it%27s_debut./
Also, from Belle & Sebastian's 'Dress Up in You', 'nearly-made-it's' is used too. What does it mean?
I'd hate to see you on the pile
Of 'nearly made it's', you've got the essence, dear
Thanks in advance. |

The first sentence is a mistake. It should be, "The failing economy has not nearly made its debut." Using "it's" instead of "its" to indicate possession is a common error even by native speakers.
The second one sounds like it's from a song or poem. I would guess the pile of "nearly made it's" means the pile of people who came close to succeeding, but didn't. They "nearly made it." |

Thank you very much, Lorikeet.
I'd like to ask another question related to 'on the pile'. Does it mean 'you' belong to the group of 'nearly made it'? What does 'on' mean here?
Thanks! |

A pile could be a pile of things you don't want, or things you threw out, but in this case, it's an imaginary "pile" of people who didn't succeed. I wouldn't like to see "you" on that pile; in other words, I think you will "make it" or succeed. |
