Dear teacher:
My penpal wrote me:
There are not any supermarkets (that I can recall) in Wailea-Makena, just bare necessities they charge an arm and leg for sandwiched between art galleries and clothing shops.
Could please advise me what does "between art galleries and clothing shops." mean here???
Thank you. |

My opinion is that something has been left out.
"they charge an arm and leg for sandwiched between art galleries and clothing shops."
One possibility is that the word "being" has been left out. "they charge an arm and leg for sandwiched being between art galleries and clothing shops."
That would mean that the supermarket was located between art galleries and clothing shops. That implies that the art galleries and clothing shops have inexpensive rent and the supermarket charging "an arm and a leg" (a lot of money) for necessities is "out of place" for the neighborhood.
My suggestion: Ask your penpal what he or she meant. _________________ Educe22 |

Correction: The corrected quote should read: One possibility is that the word "being" has been left out. "they charge an arm and leg for being sandwiched between art galleries and clothing shops."
"being" and "sandwiched" were inadvertently reversed.

May I suggest the following?
There are not any supermarkets (that I can recall) in Wailea-Makena, just shops that sell bare necessities they charge an arm and leg for, sandwiched between art galleries and clothing shops. |
