Hello. I need some help with understanding the underlined part of the following sentences. I don't understand what the sun has to do with Lofoten's lutefist restaurants. What does 'the sun may barely rise above the horizon...' mean? And why is the clause connected to the next in a conrasting relationship? Please help me. Thanks.
"For centuries, huge shoals of cod have migrated south from the Barents Sea to spawn in the sheltered waters around the Lofoten Islands, near the city of Tromso in northern Norway, where they are fished from Janurary through May. The sun may barely rise above the horizon in this northerly place, but Lofoten hosts a number of warm and welcoming restaurants that will prepare lutefisk with expertise and authenticity." |

My guess is that the sun barely rising above the horizon denotes a cold and lonely Arctic place where there are long winters. The far north is known for the sun staying low on the horizon during certain periods of the year. This would contrast with the "warm and welcoming" restaurants, which, conceivably, would be unexpected in such a stark place where the sun did not shine much. _________________ Educe22 |
