They objected to the movie neither following the book nor keeping the central theme.

Whoever viewed the movie had two problems with it (things that they disagreed with the movie as presented).

First, the book was written in a certain way by the author. The movie did not adhere to that aspect of the book. For example, let's say that the location in the book was Honolulu, Hawaii, but the movie was set in Havana, Cuba. Therefore, the movie did not follow the book.

Secondly, the book was about surfing in Hawaii, but the movie was about fishing off the coast of Cuba.

These are exaggerations of course, but the point is that when this hypothetical book was adapted into a screenplay it was reframed or rewritten by the movie's producer or director with the idea that it would be made more marketable and make more money.
