Dear teachers,
I had a question about GMAT TEST.I got confused when doing the "Sentence Correction" section. How do I know the difference among "not...but","not... but rather...", and "not...but instead..." in the sentence? Which answer should I choose? Thank you for solving my question.
Best Wishes,
Rita Hsu

I'm not familiar with the test, do you have an example question I can see?

All your "not ... but" examples are basically the same thing; the instead and rather ones might imply a stronger difference, and if the sentence is long or complicated then they stand out more than just but on its own, but this is about style. Grammatically they're all fine.

It would be helpful to see a question though, in case I'm missing something Smile
