This is from an internet article: A twelve-year-old boy who lived near to the compound in Abbottabad has come forward.

I learned that the correct way to use the word NEAR was without the word to.
Which is correct: near or near to?

In that sentence, the "to" is not necessary.

Yeah it's more common to just say near (especially in informal speech), but it's correct to keep the to in there as well.

That's interesting. For me, "near to" really doesn't sound right. I suppose it varies with the English being used.
