What is the meaning of "Nobody said a word." ?

Dear teachers:
I read the novel which named "Charlotte's Web" last week. I found the sentence "Nobody said a word." in the novel. I think that is a meaningful chunk, but I couldn't understand what that means actually. Does the sentence just means that anyone here didn't say something? Thanks a lot.

Yes. "Nobody said a word." means "Nobody spoke."
