Hi,
I bumped into a phrase--share the same bed-- the other day. I could vaguely guess its literal and figurative meaning. However, I'd like an confirmation from native speakers of English.
A: What does it mean in the following examples:
1. Big success and little responsibility don't share the same bed. (they aren't based on the same ground, sharing the common interests?)
2. politics makes strange bedfellows An adage implying that expediencepolitical or otherwiseoften dictates the formation of alliances, however temporary, between two or more highly unlikely parties. In the Middle Ages, it was not unheard of for political allies to share the same bed, especially after long hours of negotiations or strategic planning. As a result, these collaborators came to be known as bedfellows, a term which persisted even when this custom fell into disfavor. (quoted from here: http://www.thefreedictionary.com/expedience)
(common interests?)
3. And if the hawks in the trees need the dead
If you're living you don't stand a chance
For a time though you share the same bed / There are only two ends to this dance (from http://www.lyricsmode.com/lyrics/r/rachael_yamagata/elephants.html)
(you're in the same league, like hawks, ferocious and devoring?)
B: Does 'share the same bed' share the same meaning of 'be in bed with"?
Thank you very much for your help. |
