Other qualities of a good student include self-discipline and an open and critical mind. However much one knows, one must realize theres a lot more to learn and that some of what one knows may turn out to be wrong. Knowing lots of things is good, but knowing the limitations of ones knowledge is more important. Many of the classic errors of history were made by people over-confidently going beyond what they knew and understood.
Work to be educated, not merely trained.
What does the underlined sentence mean?

I take this to mean that if you are educated in a subject you know it thoroughly. If you are trained, in a subject you know enough to use it properly but the standard is lower.
So the implication is that the word, "educated" denotes a higher level of accomplishment than the word, "trained".
I don't think this is necessarily true in modern English usage, but that's what it says in your example. |
