Our nonfiction needs include how-to, useful articles on gardening, pet care and training, financial planning, and subjects of interest to a 45-plus, home-loving readership. For nonfiction articles, indicate any special qualifications you have for writing about the subject, especially scientific material. Include one or two published pieces with your article.

What does the underlined sentence mean? Does it mean that this magazine only has over 45 readers.
Plus, what does scientific material mean here? Does it refer to the subject-related material which the author once wrote or published before?

thanks

It means the people who read the magazine are over age 45 and like to do things in their homes. They would like articles about how to do things especially with gardening, pet care, finances, etc. If you want to write a scientific article, you should explain what qualifications you have in that subject, such as a job in the field, classes at a university, etc. I am not sure why they are requesting one or two published pieces with your article.
