In the following sentence,

.... We could forget about sad times, such as when a good friend moved away or a beloved pet died. We would not have to shed any more tears over them. ...

is "shed tears over them" acceptable? Can I put it this way, "shed tears for them"?

Please help me out.

It's fine to say "shed tears over".
