That's a really good question. In this case, they weren't really "camping out" like you would expect, with a tent, a camp stove, etc. If you used "had been camping out" I would expect to see the tent. I am not sure if this is a function of a slightly different meaning, or something else, however, so perhaps someone else will comment as well. |
