When "cook" is used in a meaning of "swelter", should the subject be a human being? I am cooking alive.

Yes, it's a perfectly acceptable and common metaphor to say that humans are cooking when they are in a situation where they are very hot.
Open the car window; I'm cooking!
Last summer we almost cooked in the heat. |
