Hello,
I have seen both "during the summer months" and "in the summer months". Do they mean exactly the same thing or is there any nuance?

Answer:
"During the summer months" and "in the summer months" both mean the same thing. However, there are cases in which you cannot use "in" to replace" during".
"Practical English Usage" (ISBN-10: 0194420981 or ISBN-13: 978-0194420983) would be a great reference book for you. It gives clear explanations of when to use which preposition.
