(a) Children cannot only

From this sentence above, the answer is (d), but I am confused.. why cannot (a) be the answer?

"Children cannot only suffer from depression" implies that children DO suffer from depression. This is followed by the "but it has also been proven that childhood depression is no different from adult depression." Therefore this is a true statement.
Whereas, "Children only cannot suffer from depression" cannot be a valid statement because children DO suffer from depression. I think that it has more to do with the logic of the statement than the grammar involved. _________________ Educe22 |

Question:
4. ____________ suffer from depression, but it has also been proven that childhood depression is no different from adult depression.
(a) Children cannot only
(b) Children only cannot
(c) Not only children can
(d) Not only can children
From this sentence above, the answer is (d), but I am confused.. why cannot (a) be the answer?
Answer:
Marrion, you just need to remember that "not only...but also" are correlative conjunctions and must join items that are identical in form and function.
The item following "but" is a main clause; thus the item following "not only" must be a main clause, in this case an inverted clause. Therefore, (d) is the only acceptable answer.
I hope this helps. _________________ Mary W. Ng
