This question has been always in my mind and I am always confused.
How can I tell the difference between every one and everyone?
Can somebody kindly give me an example?
Thank you so much. =) |

"everyone" and "everybody" only refer to people.
(Everyone)(Everybody) enjoyed the concert very much.
"every one" means all of 'them'.
By the time I arrived, (every one)(all) of the seats were taken, so I had to stand the whole time. |

This is a good answer, but remember, if you use "every one" the verb has to be singular:
By the time I arrived, every one of the seats was taken, so I had to stand the whole time. |

I think you are right about that.
I just said what sounded right, but of course the issue was also confused by my lumping of 'every one of' and 'all of' together.
But speaking of this, 'every one of the seats were' sounds correct to me, maybe because of its meaning of 'all' and the proximiy with "seats".
But on the other hand, 'each one of the seats was' sounds right to me.
Isn't subject-verb agreement fun! |
