The following is my question.

But we went away more disappointed than ______!
(A) we came (B) we were
(C) we had been (D) when we came

The answer is (A), but how about (D)? Would someone explain it?

Actually, I agree with PugachevV that they all work, but in my opinion, "A" is the worst of the four.

You're good at analyzing sentences. In my opinion, D is the best answer. Both B and C are somewhat incomplete in meaning.
