Quote:
A movie consists of twenty-four still pictures flashing by per second, with twenty-four gaps of blackness as each frame is taken away and a new one put in its place.

1. Can I replace 'as' in the quote with 'while' in order to be the same meaning?
2. If not possibe? What words can 'as' be replaced with? or what does it mean?
3. What does 'its' mean in the quote?
-- * 'each frame's' ?
or
* 'something else' ?
4. Could you paraphrase the quote for me?

Thanks.

Yes, you could. Here, as = "while, when, at the same time that."

Yes. "each frame" is the antecedent of the pronoun "it." "its" is the possessive form for "it."

Heh - I'll try, but it's wordier than the original, so I don't know if it's really all that helpful:

A movie is made by flashing pictures. Every second, 24 still pictures (frames) are shown in rapid succession. There are gaps in between these frames. These gaps appear black because they happen when the pictures are being switched from one to the next.
