Hello,

In the sentence:

Tons of ice have(or has?) begun to melt.

"Ice" is an uncountable noun; the use of "has begun" seems correct.

What do you think of this sentence? Thanks for your help!!

Have.

Tons of ice have begun to melt.

If you want to use "has", you could say:

A ton of ice has begun to melt.

The point is to look at the subject to determine the correct verb usage. "Tons" is the subject. It is plural; use have. The prepositional phrase "of ice" has nothing to do with the verb used.
