Hello,
In the sentence:
Tons of ice have(or has?) begun to melt.
"Ice" is an uncountable noun; the use of "has begun" seems correct.
What do you think of this sentence? Thanks for your help!! |

Have.
Tons of ice have begun to melt.
If you want to use "has", you could say:
A ton of ice has begun to melt. |

The point is to look at the subject to determine the correct verb usage. "Tons" is the subject. It is plural; use have. The prepositional phrase "of ice" has nothing to do with the verb used. _________________ TAO |
