Remember: people who partake in a rave do not need to use ecstasy. Simply defined, a rave is a party at which some form of electronic, or "techno", music is played, usually by a DJ. A rave can be as small as 25 people or larger than 25,000. One electronic musician, American DJ-composer Moby, says,"I've never tried ecsaysy, I've never tried cocaine, I've never tried heroin - the reason I stay away from it is that I value my brain too much. I don't want to trust my synapses to some stranger that I met in a nightclub. I hope to use my brain for the rest of my life."

hey, I got two questions here:

1) this is an article about Ecstasy, it talks about raves that the ecstasy causes. This is the last paragraph in the article, I wonder if it defines another meaning for the word 'rave' or any other thing. I wonder what does this paragraph has to do with ecstasy.

2) why is the word 'techno' between two quotations in the paragraph ?

Thanks in advance.

A "Rave" is not caused by ecstacy. A "rave" is British slang for a big (usually) all night party at which young people drink, dance and do drugs. Ecstacy is the drug of choice, but the person quoted is saying that he does not use any of the drugs he mentions at a rave because he thinks they will damage his brain.

"Techno" music is music produced by electronic instruments such as synthesizers.

The word "rave" is also used in this way in American English.

It's an early-summer morning in the U.S. suburb of Cobb County, Georgia, and 18-year-old "Karen" and five friends have decided to go for it. They skip their first class and sneak into the woods near their upscale high school. One of them takes out six rolls six ecstasy pills and they each swallow one. Then back to school, flying on a drug they once used only on weekends. That night they will all go out and drop more ecstasy, rolling into the early hours of another school day. It's rare that anyone would take ecstasy so often it's not physically addictive but teenagers everywhere have begun experimenting with it. "The cliques are pretty big in my school," Karen says, "and every clique does it."

Does the underlined part mean that they were using ecstasy on weekends, and now they started to use it after they skip the first lesson ?

The underlined part means that, in the past, they only used the drug on weekends.
The entire paragraph explains how the drug's use has escalated.

I think the reason Techno is in quotations is because they're using the word Techno as a generic term for many styles of Electronic music. It's easier to just say that instead of listing Drum and Bass, Jungle, House, Breakbeat etc etc.
