Actually, I'm not sure you can say "turn writer"!
It's normally the past participle, eg "Actor turned writer Mark Williams said recently..."
You can say "turn into", but that's more for surprising transformations, eg magic tricks etc. "The witch turned me into a frog"
Safer just to use "become". "He became a good doctor."
