Finally, we see that Hawking smoothed away various kinds of difficulties well and truly and reached where he is now.
Does the underlined part sound natural?

It's a common enough phrase, but in this sentence it sounds as if it needs something more.
Perhaps "and thereby reached where he is now."
or
"and in this way reached where he is now."
But it's basically OK.
"well and truly" is a bit odd there, though. Normally used for something more concrete and definite.
