Clinical evidence began to accumulate, suggesting that the new drugs had a wider range of useful activities than had been predicted from experiments in animals.
Does the underlined "activities" mean "functions" here? Is it naturally used?
Thanks!

Functions, or "applications" would be better. Activities is misused here. You have to be alive to engage in activities.
Best wishes,
