Dear teachers,
Both boys entered the deserted park, each ___ a bat to fight with. The duel would be fought until one knocked down the other.
Could please advise me why <carrying> is the answer here, instead of <carried>? As " Both boys entered the deserted park" is past tense?!
Thank you very much. |

It's connected to the punctuation.
If you had:
"Both boys entered the deserted park. Each carried a bat to fight with."
... then that would be fine. But two main verbs like that, separated only by a comma, feels a bit strange.
So with only a comma, "carrying..." is used, like an adverb phrase to describe how they entered.
Does that help?
Best wishes,
