Twitter is the facilitator of a message that we otherwise would not have heard.
==============================================================
At this sentence, What does "otherwise" mean?
[1] if Twitter had not been the facilitator of a message
[2] if Twitter were not the facilitator of a message
Which does "otherwise" mean, [1] or [2]? |

Both of those work for me!
The tenses are mixed in the sentence, so both versions fit.
To be more precise we need to know if twitter passed this message just once, in the past ("had not been" is better), or if twitter is still passing this message every day ("were not" is better)
Hope helps,
