What does "take the mainstream" mean?

He then signed and began working with some talented, underground, hip-hop groups, helping to better cultivate them to take them mainstream.

Mainstream is a term that usually refers to the common current of thought of the majority, meaning that "mainstream" things are those that are currently popular with most people. It is most often applied in the arts (i.e., music, literature, and performance).

"take them mainstream", here, means "help them gain more general acceptance or appreciation"

Hard to define the pattern. It's like an abbreviation of "take them into the mainstream", but the way it's said mainstream sounds almost like an adverb as if it were "take them away" etc
