I know the meaning of "carbon footprint"; however, I cannot find any persuading explanation about why "footprint" means the amount of emission or exhaust. Your kind explanation would really be appreciated.
Thanks in advance. |

Me neither. I had to explain this in class, more than once, and found I couldn't. I think it's just a lazily constructed soundbite that caught on.
Best wishes,

| I always thought it was like a footprint that is left after you take a step. The greenhouse gases that are emitted by something or someone wind up in the air. I googled it to find out the "real" story behind it. Wikipedia says "The concept name of the carbon footprint originates from ecological footprint, discussion, which was developed by Rees and Wackernagel in the 1990s which estimates the number of "earths" that would theoretically be required if everyone on the planet consumed resources at the same level as the person calculating their ecological footprint. However, carbon footprints are much more specific than ecological footprints since they measure direct emissions of gasses that cause climate change into the atmosphere." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_footprint if you want to read more. |
