What is the meaning of "leave#" below in the context?

"And speaking of seats, the folding chairs were hideously uncomfortable -- something like that fabled throne in Hades, which demanded a meed of blood and bone if you tried to leave it."
Craig Smith; Axelrod Quartet and NMSO; The Santa Fe New Mexican; Oct 17, 2003.

Presumably "get up from". Seems like a normal use to me.

"meed" is the word I don't know here! I guess it means toll or tribute or penalty or something like that.

Hope helps,
Ian

To go out of or away from: not allowed to leave the room.

Whereas as according to Oxford dictionary:

For any assistance, you may please ask.

Thanks.
