What is the meaning of "leave#" below in the context?
"And speaking of seats, the folding chairs were hideously uncomfortable -- something like that fabled throne in Hades, which demanded a meed of blood and bone if you tried to leave it."

Presumably "get up from". Seems like a normal use to me.
"meed" is the word I don't know here! I guess it means toll or tribute or penalty or something like that.
