You usually hear the phrase as
'...take (something) with a grain of salt.'
something = it, that, this, etc.
It basically means: you should not assume the information is true.

You can use it before or after the information, to warn the listener that the source of the information may be unreliable.
"Now, this came from Susan, so take it with a grain of salt, but she said she's sure Amanda is pregnant."
"I read that an asteroid will destroy the world in 2012, but I guess you always need to take the things you read on the internet with a grain of salt." |
