They were asked what to think about that hotel.

They were asked how to think about that hotel.

Are both ok? is there any difference in meaning? Does the second sentence cause confusion?

with 'what' and 'think', it should be
"They were asked what they thought about that/the hotel." (they saw it before, so think->thought)
or
"They were asked, 'What did you think about that hotel?'"

'how' should be used with 'to be'
"They were asked how the hotel was."
or
"They were asked, "How was the hotel?'"

There isn't really a difference in meaning. "What did you think of it?" = "How was it?"
